Motor Skills

What are Motor Skills?

Gross Motor Skills

Gross motor skills involve movements of the large muscles of the arms, legs and torso. Children rely on gross motor skills for everyday activities at school, at home and in the community. Most people use these skills easily and automatically. But gross motor skills are more complex than you think.

These skills involve the coordination of the muscles and neurological system. They impact balance and coordination. They also form the basis for fine motor skills that help us to make small movements.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists. Children use fine motor skills to do many school-related tasks.

There are lots of fun activities that can be done at home to help your child develop their gross and find motor skills to help them succeed at school. Please take a look at some of the activities within the sections below.

Person Centred Practice (PCP)

Person Centred Practice (PCP) is built around the child. It is a continual process of listening and learning about what is important TO and FOR them now and in the future. It is about the child, their family and professionals working together to support them.

One Page Profiles

Sometimes learners may require a more personalised approach to support them in school. In this instance staff, in collaboration with Parents/Carers and the child may create a one page profile detailing how best to support them.
