Curriculum for Wales

What is changing?

Our curriculum is changing from September 2022 in Wales. The curriculum has been created in Wales but shaped by the best ideas from around the world. There will be changes to improve the way learners are assessed, new ways of training staff and helping schools to continuously improve. All of these changes will complement the new curriculum.

Why must these changes happen?

The national curriculum was introduced in 1988, but since then many things have changed with technology and society. The curriculum must prepare young people to thrive in a future where adaptability, creativity and digital skills, alongside knowledge are crucial.

From September 2022, there'll be a new curriculum designed by teachers, built for children, created for a fast changing world. Giving children the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed in the future.

Key Elements

The new curriculum will include:

  • 6 Areas of Learning and Experiences (AoLEs)  from 3 to 16 years

  • 3 cross curriculum areas;  literacy, numeracy and digital competence

  • Progression reference points at ages, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 16

  • Achievement outcomes which describe expected achievements at each progression reference point
